What Age Should Kids Start 1-2-1 Football Coaching?

15 June 2026 5 min read

It's the question we get asked more than any other by parents: 'Is my child too young for 1-2-1?' Short answer: from age 4 if the session is built around the child. Long answer below.

Ages 4–6: It's about love of the game

At this age, 1-2-1 sessions should be playful, varied, and short on instruction. The goal isn't to build a player — it's to build a kid who runs at footballs instead of away from them. Fundamental movement skills, basic ball contact, and lots of small wins.

Ages 7–10: The technical window

This is the sweet spot. Coordination is developing fast, kids can take on real coaching, and habits formed here tend to stick. 1-2-1 work focuses on ball mastery, both feet, basic turns, passing technique, and starting to understand position.

Ages 11–14: Position, decisions, intensity

Kids playing for teams often hit a plateau here — they're decent but not progressing. 1-2-1 helps them sharpen their position-specific game (finishing for a striker, distribution for a midfielder), and start reading the game faster.

Ages 15+: Targeted gap-closing

Older players come to us with specific goals — trials, scholarships, semi-pro level. Sessions are more analytical, often paired with match analysis.

The real test (any age)

Does your child come home buzzing? Do they want to go back? If yes, the age is right. If they're dreading it, the age — or the coach — is wrong.
